Drive-Reverse sound from the back of the car

Dear All,

I just bought my 1st MB car and try to get used to it (E200, petrol, T-model from 09.2013, 24000 km). The ride on the last Friday from MB dealer at Fulda back to The Netherlands was awesome.

Today when I moved my car from a garage box to put the temporary license plates, I recognized some sound from the back of the car when changing the gearbox from D to R and back. It is close to a friction sound and quite (but not very) loud, in addition to the some quiet knocking sound when the gears is changing from D to R or back.

I've never heard this on my former front-wheel drive cars.

Is this normal or should I visit a dealer?

Danke :).

Thank you for the reply.

Do you mean a catalytic convertor? How it could be related to the R<->D gear switch? Maybe I misunderstood you?

Ooops, I believe that you mean the _torque converter_?

No i mean transmission Converter you Must Change the Converter , oil , filtre and new gasket here in Germany you pay for this work 1000-1500€

Yes torque Converter :-)

You can call Umbscheiden.de

They repair your Converter for 500€

Do not worry. Your car should be under warranty and *if* something needs to be fixed, you won't be charged 1000, 1500, or 500 Euros.

Just visit a MB service point and show your issue.

Thank you! I'll visit the MB service and I have a Junge Stern warranty :).

By the way, should I avoid driving with this problem?

Don't make You crazy. You already drove back to Holland without any breakdown. ;)

You are definitely right, thank you :).

Anyhow, I should notice that the rubbing sound appears from the back of the car and for the short moment of time only when the R<->D gear change is done. Other gear changes sound silent.

Do you have a sound-file to share it with us? This might be helpful concerning further diagnosis ;)

Thank you, it's a good idea.

You may find the mp3 file here - https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/nikolsky.name/mb/dr.mp3 or attached to this message.

I recorded it this morning inside my garage box just after the engine was started.

I still hope :) that this may be some kind of sound coming from brakes because the brake pedal was depressed and car was moving slightly forward or back while I changed R<->D. And it comes from the rear part of the car (I assume that the gearbox and torque transmitted are located closed to the engine?).

I'll check tonight how it sounds with the parking break applied only.

Brake shouldn't matter - if not pressed, they shouldn't make any sound. Even more so, if you press the break and the car stands still.
