Road / Tire / Wind noise in s40 and v50 VS Golf Variant?
Hi
Which car would be quieter(wind noise/road, tire noise), new Golf Variant or Volvo s40/v50? Few days ago I was driving v50 and have to say it wasn't as quiet as my old Peugeot 406.
Regards

Hi, I know this is German forum, and sorry that I writing in English, but I do not speak in Your language.
My post translated by Google Transtator:
Welches Auto würde leiser (Windgeräusche / Straße, Abrollgeräusch), neue Golf Variant oder Volvo S40/V50 werden? Vor einigen Tagen fuhr ich v50 und muss sagen, es war nicht so leise wie mein alter Peugeot 406.
The V50/S40 is sufficiently quiet and far from noisy (can't compare directly to the Golf), but, as a compact wagon, probably not as quiet as its larger competitors. However, you do have the option to order it with laminated side windows, which reduces wind/road noise to great degree and thus makes the S40/V50 presumably one of the quietest in its class.
In a nutshell:
V50 with standard windows = moderately quiet
V50 with laminated windows = super-quiet
Für die Westerwelles auf Deutsch: Ohne Verbundglas ist er mäßig leise, mit super-leise.
"You do have the option to order it with laminated side windows, which reduces the wind/road noise and makes the S40/V50 presumably one of the quietest in its class."
I can confirm the great comfort inside the car, when you have laminated side windows. You must try it on a trip to feel the extremely difference.
Thx for the replay.
I am thinking about a dealer demo car, and it is Kinetic version. So I don't think it has laminated windows. Brand new V50 is more expensive than Golf Variant and it is just out of my budget

I cannot compare the Golf with the V50, but with the C30. The front, the chassis and the interior are comparable since they stand on the same platform and share a lot of parts. I do have the laminated windows, so my C30 is a lot less noisy than a standard one. But from test drives with standard equipped C30s I can still compare. The Golf (Mk V) is not so noisy concerning wind but you can hear nearly everything happening around the wheels. On uneven roads its "knocking" everywhere, the roll noise is very loud (esp. with winter tyres) – the whole car just sounds like a big and cheap tin. In addition you the isolation of the engine ist very weak. The car I am referring to has one of the old 1.9l TDIs (it's a 2008 model) and is terrible to drive at speeds of 120km/h or higher. In comparison the C30 and certainly also the V50 is a lot quieter, especially the chassis is isolated really good.

Hi
I was driving the V50 (1.6d2) and the Golf 6(1,4Tsi 122KM) hatchback, and they are very similar in terms of road, wind and tire noise. However the Golf mk6 is a lot quieter than the Golf mk5 and the old Jetta (as you said - main problem is tire and road noise in those cars).
But! the Golf Variant is completely different story because this car is somewhere between mk6 and mk5, some elements are new, but a lot of things is left unchanged since the old model. So it hard to compare the Golf Variant to any Golf Hatchback. Some people are saying that it is as quiet as the Hatch mk6, other complaining it is much louder...
Regards
The tires have a high influence on the noise level inside of the car. My old Pirelli summertires became very loud after approximate 10.000 km, but they lasted about 30.000 km . After changing to Continental the noise level in the car was remarkable lower.
Regards, Olli
