Hi Jan,

I'd strongly recommend a fully synthetic engine oil like 5W-40 - the MB dealers in my orbit all use the Fuchs brand, but does not have to be Fuchs - just a good known brand.

If there is no known service history available for your car I'd change all fluids - including the suspension oil - that includes the coolant and brake fluid.

You can also try to look up oils and lubricants here:

(If you can be bothered to navigate your way trough this large data base)

Let us know the VIN please.

Thank you for quick response. I'll try to order it. Thanks

Jan

Mercedes prescribes two release groups, 229.3 and the better 229.5. From the 229.5 group I would choose a 0W-40, for example Exxon Mobil 1 or Shell Helix Ultra. I would change the automatic transmission oil next, that would be Fuchs TITAN ATF 4134.

You asked for the best, not just any compromise, right?

Only the best please :) that's my dream car so it has to be quality. Thank you

Like it, so the next is differential oil, about 1,5 liter Castrol TRANSMAX 75W-140 Limited Slip LL.

That's what I wanted to do as well. Thank you... So the transmission oil must be changed as well? The car is from 1997 100k MLS.. Thank you

The 5speed transmission was initially considered "fill for life" but MB changed their minds and then specified every 60,000km or 3 years. (filter as well)

But if it has been changed @ 60,000km it doesn't need to be done til 120,000km. Now it depends on when it hit the 60,000km mark ?

I trust you have the 722.6 transmission because we don't know your VIN ?

If it is really a My 97 it would definitely have eng. M120.983 and Tx 722.621

No, not if you let a competent mechanic attend to it.

When it comes to replacing certain components you may need deep pockets.

It's a good system when fully functioning.

Do you have any issues ?

Leaks ?

Or a hard bouncy ride ?
