Waterproof the underlying part of the soft top before assembly/replacement.

Which method to use and what material would be ideal to make the hidden part of the soft top waterproof and then mount it and forget about it?

Read everything. In the present case the rubber membrane in the middle of the canvas/sub-membrane sandwich is in an irreversible condition due to old age.

This is why I thought of covering a used/new replacement soft top with an additional adhesive rubber film as a 4th layer. No one would ever see it again once assembled but it would be immortal against water infiltration.
