Navi software update
Hi gentlemen,
Attached is the version I have on my B8.5.
Do I need to do a software update in order to do a map update?
What is the latest software version and where is the changelog to see the improvements/changes?
Do you find it really necessary to do the software update to the latest version?

you need the newest firmware, before you can update the newest MAP-Update, for youre Navigation is:
Firmware:HN+_EU_AU3G_K0942
Newest Map-Update is: 6.29.1

Does the Google Earth nav show the speed limit sign on the lower right corner of the screen just like Audi MMI nav shows it?
Yes - but those data are not being fetched by Google. Those are the same data which are stored inside the nav in its database.
The Google Erath-View is just showing the "earth-layer-picture" in some simple way. The complete nav-data is put on a layer on top of this view from the nav-database again.
So if there is a street visible in Google-Earth view the nav will not direct you through this street if this is not known by the database - the same for the speed signs - this is all loaded from the internal memory.

My understanding was it was using/pulling Google's up to date road/map information but looks like it still uses mmi nav database, which leads us to the need to do a map update to have a more recent map even when using G-Earth with sim data enabled.
That's totally dìfferent compared to Google Maps that we have on our mobile phones but not on our Audi cars (unless there is some sort of 3rd party android device installed).
You are absolutely right. Audi wants to make money with their updates.

... nachdem du ganz am Anfang völligen Quatsch geschrieben hast, da kamst du mit einer ganz schrulligen FW-Version um die Ecke. Wo du die her hattest, keine Ahnung.
