What is this for?
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the following are for (see picks, red circle)? I can’t seem to find their description in the user manual. One is a switch on the climate control panel; the other is a flap that sits behind the rear view mirror. On the side facing the windscreen there is a small hole, which seems to emit a red light (not to be confused with the ambient lighting).
The car is an Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI 170ps, date of manufacture 12/06.
Sorry my written German is not too hot, but I can read it.
Thanks.

But it has a small hole with a red light? I could understand if it was a small sun flap, but its not.
The button in the first picture is for the air ducts nozzles. Push it and you will see what happen.
Hello T-Bag,
the first picture is for the air entrance in the middle from your panel. The air comes only from there, if you push this switch.
Do you see the hole from inside or outside the car? Maybe you mean the lightsensor for the mirrrow.
Thanks,
So when I press the switch the airflow is restricted to the air ducts. I have tried it before, but can’t say that I noticed a difference, except that the car seemed ‘smelly’.
Outside, at first I thought it might be some kind of light sensor....
You can feel a real difference, if you take the air ducts on high.
It have to be the light sensor, if you see the hole from the outside your car.
Thanks Audi-Fan,
So if it is a light sensor, then what is it for? To switch on my lights when it gets dark?
do you have a "Auto" Sign on your Light Switch?
if yes ,you must have a light sensor for beginning darkness.
There it gives an other Light sensor ,must be in your rear mirror if you have self dimming mirrors
I mean the light sensor is for the automatic dipping rear view mirror and I think for the automatic light. It takes automatically the light from the car in the night on. For this feature you need the light switch with Auto setting.
Yes Hille, I have an 'Auto', but the funny thing is that you can move the 'flap', and the sensor is no longer pointing out the windscreen. When I do this then the lights still switch on when it gets dark.
Are you sure that the senor pointing out the windscreen? I don´t think that a red light shining out the windscreen.
I have light sensor too, but my sensor haven´t a light.
Does it look like this?
heh, maybe it used to be a Police car
